Born and raised in Edmonton, I received my Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science and Philosophy at the University of Alberta in 1998. I went on to complete my Bachelor of Laws (Juris Doctorate) at the University of Saskatchewan in 2002 where I focused mainly on Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure, Evidence and Sentencing. Upon returning to my home province, I completed my Articles with the Alberta Department of Justice where I then served as an ad hoc Provincial Court Prosecutor before ultimately becoming a Criminal Defense Lawyer in 2006.

From 2006 onward, I have represented Edmonton and particularly the rural communities surrounding Edmonton on matters ranging from Traffic Safety Act and other Provincial Statute violations to Criminal Code/Youth Criminal Justice Act and Controlled Drugs and Substances Act charges. As a result of my travels, I have found that experience, preparation, integrity with the Courts as well as familiarity with the various Court jurisdictions and their individual customs and procedures while exercising consummate professionalism, with a touch of folksiness, are the key ingredients to mounting any successful defense, avoiding having a Criminal Record, going to Jail or even just to clear one’s own good name.

I am a firm believer that in this process, attention to and communication with my clients are also of paramount importance and that the more informed and prepared they are, the more in control they feel. A very important part of my job includes listening to my clients and ensuring that their voices are confidently heard in what is often a tumultuous and whirlwind process.

Job satisfaction matters to me and it is extremely satisfying when I can help bring a family back together during a time of unprecedented stress or when I can help ensure that a young person with addiction issues finds the right path and does not get burdened with a Criminal Record for the rest of their lives or when I can help to protect a person’s freedom or reputation against the weight of the state just because they became tangled up on the wrong side of the law for a brief moment in their otherwise normal lives.

In my private time family is of the utmost importance to me. I also volunteer my skills as a musician/drummer with other lawyers for charity benefits and shows, the most recent being one dedicated to raising funds for inner city children unable to afford sports equipment. From a young age music has always been important to me, communicating and connecting with all types of people along the way whether it be in music or in law has always been my passion, education and reward.

Break and Enter, Theft Under $5000, Possession of Break-In Instruments, Possession of a Weapon for a Dangerous Purpose, Charges Withdrawn

Airdrie Provincial Court
Case Number: 23500891

Our client was facing a number of serious criminal charges after it was alleged that he had broken into a home and had stolen a number of items.

Upon being retained we immediately sought disclosure, including a fingerprint analysis. We determined that the identification of our client as the accused could not be proven beyond a reasonable doubt.

We negotiated with the Crown and they withdrew all of the charges.

Successful Result: Charges Withdrawn

Domestic Assault, Charge Withdrawn

Airdrie Provincial Court
Case Number: 7620521

Our client was charged with assault against his ex-wife. He was also served with an Emergency Protection Order (EPO) that contained several serious allegations.

Once we were retained we immediately sought disclosure and began resolution discussions with the Crown. We found several extreme discrepancies between the allegations in the EPO and what the complainant told police. We used this to challenge the complainant’s credibility, and the assault charge was withdrawn weeks after our client’s first court appearance.

Successful Result: No Criminal Record, Charge Withdrawn

Impaired Driving and Over .08, Charges Withdrawn

Calgary Provincial Court
Case Number: 7519721

Our client drove through a checkstop, indicated he had some drinks that evening, and was noted to have glassy mirrored eyes and a smell of alcohol on his breath.  He failed the roadside breath test, blew .140 on the evidentiary instrument, and was charged with impaired driving and driving over .08.

Once we were retained, we set the matter for trial and filed a motion alleging a violation of our client’s Constitutional rights under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.  Days before trial, we successfully negotiated the withdrawal of all charges.

Successful Result: No Criminal Record, Charges Withdrawn
