About Barbara Dowker
I am an Associate Lawyer with Savage Oykhman Law, Edmonton Branch. Savage Oykhman Law is a Full Service Criminal Defence Law Office, with central offices in Edmonton, Calgary, Toronto and Victoria.
I pair a diligent work ethic and unique legal perspective with a high standard of customer service. I am committed to ensuring that every one of my clients feels heard, understood, respected, and satisfied throughout the legal process.
Approach to Advocacy
My approach to advocacy has been shaped by my experience in a variety of legal settings. My time working with the Crown Prosecutor’s Office in Edmonton deepened my understanding of multifaceted legal issues. It makes me uniquely positioned to anticipate the Crown’s arguments, and advocate for my client’s needs against them.
Similarly, my experience working as a Caseworker for Student Legal Services really inspired me to advocate for those who need it most. I am particularly passionate about representing underprivileged individuals, as well as those who struggle with mental health. Canada’s Criminal Justice System disproportionately affects people with mental health problems. It is my job to defend all my clients to the best of my ability, but especially those with mental health struggles, to combat this phenomenon.
I really value a collaborative approach to advocacy. At Savage Oykhman Law, our team of defence lawyers work together, which means that when a client retains one of us, they retain all of us. We will work tirelessly and collectively to achieve the best result possible.
My drive to obtain the best possible outcome is complimented by my empathy for my clients’ individualized needs. No two cases are the same, and neither are the clients involved. I understand and empathize for the stressful situation they are in. By ensuring that lines of communication remain open and keeping them fully in the loop, I do my best to reduce the weight on their shoulders.
Education, Accomplishments and Career Path
I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology with Honours from MacEwan University in 2014, and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of Alberta in 2019. I completed my articles in June of 2020 and was called to the bar in July of 2020.
While in university, I gained valuable experience working and volunteering in a variety of legal and academic settings. These include:
Prior to pursuing a legal career, I worked in the social work field where I was a Caseworker both for paroled Federal offenders and youth in Child and Family Services. Within this position, I assisted my clients to transition into better situations and tended to their needs within the community. In addition to my psychological clinical practicums throughout my undergraduate degree, my experience in the social work industry inspired me to embark on my journey to become a lawyer. I desire to use my skills, compassion and empathy to provide a voice for those who need it in the Canadian Criminal Justice System.
