About Moira McAvoy
I am an Associate Lawyer at the Full-Service Criminal Law Firm of Savage Oykhman Law practicing exclusively in Criminal Defence.
I obtained a Juris Doctor (JD) from Bond University in 2017, graduating with First Class Honours. During law school I was awarded several academic awards, including ‘First in Class’ for Criminal Law and Procedure. After law school, I completed the National Committee on Accreditation (NCA) exams in 2018 and commenced my articles shortly thereafter. I was called to the Bar in Alberta in September 2019.
During my articles, I was fortunate to work at not one, but two, of the best criminal law firms in Calgary. I finished my articles at Savage Oykhman Law, under the personal guidance and supervision of the senior partner in the firm, Ian Savage. Although I assist clients on a broad range of criminal matters, I have a strong focus on impaired driving cases and Alberta Administrative License Suspension (AALS) appeals. Thanks for the mentorship of senior counsel in the firm, I have been able assist with hundreds of impaired driving trials and license appeals. I am confident I am well trained to identify Charter breaches and triable issues in impaired driving cases, as well as other areas of criminal law.
My legal training thus far also provided me with valuable court room experience, allowing me to become a fierce advocate for my clients, in and out of the courtroom. Further, I understand the unique situation that each client faces when charged with a criminal offence and I am flexible and creative when obtaining positive results for my clients. Know that I always give 100% to whatever I do. Whether it be competing in Canadian National Championships as a synchro swimmer, or fighting to get my clients the best result possible, I don’t give up. Likewise, I never stop learning. I am a member of, and participant in, the Criminal Defence Lawyers Association, taking every opportunity to learn about the latest cases, defences, and strategies.
When I’m not in court or at the office working on my clients cases, you can find me volunteering with Calgary Legal Guidance, or coaching young athletes through the Artistic Swimming community.
