Ryan Patmore is a criminal defence lawyer practicing defending those charged with criminal offences throughout Alberta, Saskatchewan, and interior British Columbia. A born and raised Calgarian, he spent much of his life in the Okanagan Valley where he has extended his practice. Mr. Patmore is fluent in French, and accepts Legal Aid and private retainers throughout Alberta, Saskatchewan, and British Columbia. He is a member of the Law Society of Alberta, the Law Society of Saskatchewan, the Law Society of British Columbia, and the Calgary Defence Lawyers Association.
Mr. Patmore obtained his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Political Science from the University of Calgary. He then attended Law School at the University of Manitoba where he excelled at Criminal Law and Procedure and received Honourary recognition for his advocacy skills and exceptional performance in moot court competitions.
Mr. Patmore’s career in Criminal Defence began with Legal Aid, where he committed himself to providing access to justice for hundreds of people charged with offences under the Criminal Code of Canada, the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, and other Provincial statutes. In that capacity, he had carriage of minor to extremely complex criminal cases very early on in his career, and successfully defended his clients in Courts and Tribunals throughout the Prairies. This also allowed him to provide mentorship to law students, and gain valuable insight working alongside some of the brightest legal minds in Canada. Through this invaluable experience, Mr. Patmore became adept early on at identifying weaknesses in the Crown cases against his clients, and exposing violations of their legal rights guaranteed under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms.
Mr. Patmore is able to offer his clients a unique perspective as Defence Counsel through his years of experience working alongside members of the Judiciary, and from both sides of the adversarial system. He worked as a Judicial Clerk in the Criminal Division of the Provincial Court of Alberta for several years, and was subsequently selected to assist senior Crown Prosecutors in the Criminal Intake Unit of Manitoba Justice through all stages of the preparation of complex, high profile criminal cases in Provincial and Superior Courts.
Mr. Patmore has extensive criminal trial experience arguing in Courts across Canada, including the Provincial Court of Manitoba, the Supreme Court of British Columbia, the Provincial Court of Alberta, the Court of Queen’s Bench of Alberta, and the Alberta Court of Appeal. He is actively engaged in the complex and evolving area of Criminal Charter litigation and has lectured law students at the Alberta Bar Admission Course on all matters germane to criminal advocacy and trial strategy.
