About Brady Knight
I am a criminal defence lawyer at the Saskatoon branch of Oykhman Criminal Defence, a full-service criminal defence law firm with offices in Saskatoon, Regina, and across Western Canada.
If I’m not at the office, you can probably find me conducting bail hearings, trials, and contested sentencings at Provincial Court or at the Court of Queen’s Bench somewhere in Saskatchewan. I also have significant experience assisting on matters at the Court of Appeal and can be found there occasionally as well.
Approach to Advocacy
Advocacy means more than just persuading a judge at trial. It involves discussions with police officers, negotiations with prosecutors, strategizing with counsel for co-accused, and much more. Often, my advocacy outside of the courtroom results in a client’s matter being resolved to their satisfaction without the need for a trial. But when a trial is required, I come prepared with the necessary knowledge and experience to defend my clients to the fullest extent of the law. If you take the time to ask, I would be happy to share my proven track record of success with you both in and out of the courtroom.
Throughout this process communication is key. I want to make sure you understand your options and can make an informed decision at every turn. I pride myself on my communication skills, developed over more than seven years working as a journalist in print, radio, and television prior to attending law school.
I’m truly passionate about my work, and proud to be part of a team-oriented firm. When you retain one of us at Oykhman Criminal Defence, you are also benefiting from the collective knowledge and experience of an entire team of skilled and passionate advocates.
Education Awards, and Career Path
After growing up on a farm in small-town Manitoba, I completed my Bachelor of Arts in Journalism at the University of Regina. Prior to (and during) my undergraduate education I worked for several different media outlets across Manitoba and Saskatchewan.
I graduated from the University of Saskatchewan College of Law with my Juris Doctor in 2018. Several law school experiences really ignited my passion for criminal law, including:
- The Criminal Intensive Program, during which I had the opportunity to work with a criminal defence lawyer in Saskatoon for a full semester.
- Volunteer work with CLASSIC (Community Legal Assistance Services for Saskatoon Inner City Inc.). This organization is dedicated to representing low-income clients who did not qualify for Legal Aid. These individuals could not afford a lawyer for their criminal matters, but with supervision from a staff lawyer, I helped represent some of them in court.
- Participation in the Sopinka Cup. This is a national championship for Canada’s only criminal jury-trial moot. I’m proud to say that our team beat out the competition from all across Canada, and brought home the gold for the U of S.
After law school, I articled with a large firm in Regina, and subsequently stayed on as an associate for one year. During my tenure, I worked on numerous high-profile appeals and sat second chair for a weeklong manslaughter trial.
Prior to joining Oykhman Criminal Defence, I worked for Legal Aid Saskatchewan in La Ronge, serving Saskatchewan’s most northern residents. I conducted bail hearings, trials, and sentencings in 10 different communities across the north, representing clients on everything from aggravated assault and robbery, to impaired driving and uttering threats.
